Tranexamic Acid, and What It Does for Pigment

Tranexamic acid began as a medication for controlling bleeding. Its use in skincare came later, and it turned out to be useful against one of the harder problems in pigment.

How it works

Pigment problems trace back to melanin production. Tranexamic acid interrupts part of that pathway, which is why it fades existing discoloration and helps prevent new marks forming where the trigger is inflammation or hormones rather than sun alone.

That makes it relevant to melasma, sun spots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the marks left behind after acne or irritation clears.

Why it gets reached for on melasma

Melasma is hormonally driven, it recurs, and it does not respond reliably to the treatments that work on sun damage. It also punishes aggressive treatment. An agent gentle enough to use consistently across months is often more useful than a stronger one the skin cannot tolerate, and tranexamic acid is generally better tolerated than hydroquinone.

What it pairs with

Vitamin C and niacinamide are the usual partners, for pigment and for barrier support. Glycolic acid is sometimes added, though not on the same nights and not on skin that is already reacting.

The part that is not optional

Daily sun protection. Every pigment-directed ingredient is working against UV exposure, and without SPF you are treating and re-triggering the same discoloration. If you take one thing from this, take that.

Melasma is worth having a provider assess rather than treating alone, because the wrong approach can darken it.
